About Our Group
Our Group was one of the very earliest Scout Groups to be established. It was founded in 1908, just after Lord Baden-Powell organised the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island.
Our Scout Troop moved to its present site in the 1940’s, when it was fortunate enough to be given an old army Nissen hut erected by the Back family in the grounds of Lydeard House.
With the use of an old quarry area and some woodland, the site was set for what is now a flourishing Scout Group with two Beaver Colonies, two Cub Packs, and a Scout Troop.
Again we were well blessed when the Back family donated an adjoining field which became a car park and camping field. In addition the various owners, including the current ones, of Lydeard House have offered great support to the Group and have kindly allowed us to continue to use the old quarry and wooded area.
We offer a diverse range of activities, from traditional outdoor scouting skills to modern technology projects, ensuring our members develop “Skills for Life.”
How We Are Governed
The Group is governed by the Group Scout Council, which includes all parents and carers of our young people, and the leaders. At our Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Council elects the Group Trustee Board.
The Trustees hold the legal responsibility for the Group’s assets, and ensures that the Group operates within both the Charity Commission guidelines, and the Scout Association’s rules.
This structure allows our uniformed leaders to focus on delivering a world-class program for our young people while the Trustee Board handles the charity’s administration, safety, and financial health.
